Did you know that…
- Bees produce propolis by mixing saliva with beeswax, plant resins, balms, essential oils, pollen, and bioflavonoids. It is naturally antioxidant, antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal, and helps support the immune system - both ours and that of the beehive!
- Bees have many uses for propolis: to cover up air cracks and protect the hive from drafts and moisture, to solidify their structures, to mummify dead intruders that are too large to remove, and as an antiseptic treatment for wax cells.
- In ancient Egypt, propolis was used for embalming and mummification. Later, it was used in ancient Rome, in France in the 18th and 19th centuries, in Africa and in Russia for the treatment, disinfection, anaesthesia and healing of wounds.
